It is healthy comfort food and a great source of protein. It is a dish made with split peas and cooked with onions, tomatoes, spices, etc. Our dish was prepared with our HomeStyle Yellow Split Peas and our Pride of India Spices: Black Mustard Seeds, Fennel (Soomph) Seeds, Cumin (Jeera) Seeds, Fenugreek (Methie) Seeds, Dried Chillies, Crushed Chilli & Tumeric Powder. Ideal for a plant-based, meat-free or vegan diet.

Serves 3-4. 
Split Pea Soup

Notes:

Substitute our HomeStyle Yellow Split Peas with our HomeStyle Pink Split Peas or Green Split Peas.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp oil/ghee
  • 1 onion, finely sliced
  • 1 tomato, grated/blended
  • ½ tsp Pride of India Black Mustard Seeds
  • ½ tsp Pride of India Fennel (Soomph) Seeds
  • ½ tsp Pride of India Cumin (Jeera) Seeds
  • ½ tsp Pride of India Fenugreek (Methie) Seeds
  • 2 Pride of India Dried Chillies
  • 1 tsp Pride of India Tumeric Powder
  • 1 cup HomeStyle Yellow Split Peas, boiled
  • 5 cloves garlic, finely chopped/grated
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • Pride of India Crushed Chilli, for garnishing
  • fresh coriander, for garnishing
  • salt
  • water

Method

  • Soak HomeStyle Yellow Split Peas overnight or for a few hours. Add water to cover and boil until soft and smooth.
  • Heat oil/ghee in a pot. Fry onion, Pride of India Black Mustard Seeds, Fennel (Soomph) Seeds, Dried Chillies, Cumin (Jeera) Seeds, Fenugreek (Methie) Seeds and curry leaves. Sauté until onions are translucent.
  • Add Pride of India Tumeric Powder and fry for approximately 30 seconds. Add a little water, if necessary.
  • Add tomato and garlic and cook on low heat for 5 minutes.
  • Add the boiled HomeStyle Yellow Split Peas, water to cover and bring to a boil. Season with salt.
  • Simmer for 20-30 minutes or until you have achieved your desired consistency.
  • Garnish with Pride of India Crushed Chilli and fresh coriander.
  • Serve with rice or your choice of flatbread (roti, paratha, naan or puri).
