Chana Masala is an aromatic and flavourful curry prepared with chickpeas in a spicy tomato, onion & masala gravy. We prepared our dish using our HomeStyle Chickpeas and Pride of India Spices: Ginger & Garlic Masala, Tumeric Powder, Garum Masala, Braising Spice and Crushed Chilli. Ideal for a meat-free, plant-based or vegan diet.

Chana Masala

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 1 onion, finely sliced
  • 1 tbsp Pride of India Braising Spice
  • 3 tsp Pride of India Ginger & Garlic Masala
  • ½ tsp Pride of India Garum Masala
  • ½ tsp Pride of India Tumeric Powder
  • ¼ tsp Pride of India Crushed Chilli
  • 250g HomeStyle Chickpeas, boiled
  • 1 tomato, grated/blended
  • spring onions, for garnishing
  • salt
  • water

Method

  • Soak HomeStyle Chickpeas overnight or for a few hours. Add water to cover and boil until tender.
  • Heat oil in a pot. Sauté onion until golden brown.
  • Add Pride of India Ginger & Garlic Masala, Garum Masala, Tumeric Powder, Crushed Chilli and fry for approximately 1 minute. Add a little water, if necessary.
  • Add tomato, Pride of India Braising Spice and cook until soft. Note the braising spice must be added with the tomato to avoid the dehydrated onions from burning. The dehydrated onions and braising spices will infuse throughout the cooking process to enhance the flavour of the dish.
  • Add the boiled HomeStyle Chickpeas and cook for approximately 10 minutes. Add a little salt to taste.
  • Cook until the water has reduced and you achieved your desired consistency.
  • Garnish with spring onions.
  • Serve with rice (basmati, brown, jasmine or cauliflower rice) or your choice of flatbread (roti, paratha, naan or puri).
